Te Rau Aroha, an initiative of the Whānau Ora team at Te Puna Ora o Mataatua, recently hosted a special Christmas lunch to bring together whānau experiencing housing challenges and those seeking connection and support in the Whakatāne rohe.
Kaiāwhina Te Pokapū Hapori, Vanessa Albert, says the festive season can be especially isolating for many, including the elderly, homeless, and those living alone.
“A Christmas lunch provides a sense of belonging within the community. For people struggling financially without stable housing, a warm meal can be a rare comfort. It ensures they have access to nutritious food during a time that can be a struggle – and offers a welcoming safe environment where everyone feels included,” says Ms Albert.
The event welcomed individuals and families facing housing insecurity, temporary living arrangements, or simply seeking a safe space and nourishment. Beyond the Christmas celebration, Te Rau Aroha continues to provide weekday breakfasts for those in need.
“Everyone deserves dignity, respect and access to essential services. Our annual Christmas lunch is in addition to our weekday breakfast service to uplift those in need,” she adds.
Te Rau Aroha is planning to broaden its services by introducing shower and laundry facilities, further strengthening its commitment to providing a safe and welcoming space where whānau can access essential support and pathways to wellbeing. At the heart of these efforts are the values of Whanaungatanga and Manaakitanga, which underpin all services offered by Te Puna Ora o Mataatua and are consistently practiced and upheld by kaimahi in their everyday roles.
Te Rau Aroha also offer health checks and can provide information from the NZ Heart Foundation, Diabetes NZ and Bowel Cancer services.
