Join us for Te Waka Tūhono Ki Tua, jointly hosted with Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi and Te Kaunihera o Ngā Neehi Māori.

This free Nursing Wānanga, spread across two days, is for support workers, Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Nursing Tauira and those interested in the field.

Break out sessions

On the second day of the wananga, we will be hosting clinical breakout sessions. Participants will have the opportunity to attend two clinical breakout sessions on this day, but please note that spaces are limited. We ask you to rank each clinical breakout session according to your preference. Assign a number to each session, where 1 represents the session you are most interested in attending, and 5 represents the session you are least interested in attending. Please put a number by each Clinical breakout session that you would like to attend.

Musculoskeletal System (MSK)(Required)

This hands-on workshop covers key skills in musculoskeletal history taking, assessment, and examination. Participants will practice physical assessments, develop differential diagnoses, explore treatment options—including rongoā Māori—and refine their clinical decision-making. Delivered by Carol Dewes and Jutine Tito, this session supports the journey to becoming Mātanga Tapuhi.

Paediatric Assesment(Required)

Comprehensive Head-to-Toe Pediatric Assessment with Case Scenarios for Common Presenting Complaints

Acute Care(Required)

This hands-on workshop covers important principles in respiratory assessment. It utilizes a clinical assessment framework that includes taking a health history and conducting a physical assessment. It includes familiarization with "look, listen and feel" as well as simple auscultation, percussion and palpation. At the end of the workshop there will be a discussion on the ethics of resuscitation based on what is learned in the body of the workshop looking at it from Te Ao Māori.

Ukutangi – Breathing Life into Clay and Whakapapa(Required)

This interactive and hands-on workshop explores the whakapapa of uku (clay) and its connection to te ao Māori through the creation of the ukutangi, a traditional clay flute. Participants will learn how to craft, shape, and play their own ukutangi while engaging with pūrākau (Māori narratives), atua, and the tikanga surrounding this taonga pūoro. Using Te Tīmatanga o te Ao as a guiding framework, we will explore the whakapapa of uku, connecting the process of making ukutangi to the creation of the world. This workshop will provide participants with an opportunity to infuse their own mauri and wairua into their uku, deepening their connection to the whenua and the sounds that surround us.

“You can’t pour from an empty cup – take of yourself first”. In today's fast-paced world, taking time for self-care is essential to maintaining a balanced and healthy lifestyle. This workshop examines the when, why, and how of self-care, and explores some self-care activities. (We also have chocolate)
